Been a busy few weeks for me.

Kinja'd!!!

Product launch at work so had to rush a lot of things in, followed by more fixes. A production release blew up a few days ago and had to be rolled back, ended up going out again... at 5am. Originally scheduled a call to talk to my boss to see “how’s things” past Friday, but I pushed it out to get the urgent work done first. This call was kinda overdue, it’s almost an “are you giving me a raise” call. I actually got to the point where my coworkers say I should be doing this. Joined on as a junior because of my thin resume, but reality now I’m doing just as much work, if not more, than the more senior folks on my team, I’m pretty much the only guy supporting one important part of my project team.

Meanwhile got a call from another company asking if I was interested, made it to the second round interview this week (running out of excuses to sneak AFK to answer the interviews here...). Job seems to pay a lot more, basically back to my old senior salary, much closer to home (assuming we’re even going to the office), but the down side it’s closer to a production support job than my current one, which mostly serves dev only. But then I’m in a much larger on-call rotation pool.

Car wise, it’s almost switchover time. Solstice developed a weird clunk some weird “plink” that occurs when I get going, or going up a slight incline, or turning, it’s just random and I can’t fully reproduce it. F30's waiting on me putting my winters back on to replace the bent summers and replacing some rubbing wheel bearings. That’s going to cost some dough.

Got a lot to think about.

When I was a kid, small town west coast, there was an E28 Alpina in town very similar to that E12 - the grey market area was wild.

Moving soon, not long ago I’d say “oh, I can pack up and be out in half a day”. Not even close.

i own a two family house and my tenants left about 2 weeks ago. i was finally home during the day to do the walk-thru for their security deposit . pretty good but they let ivy grow on the back of the house from the neighbor’s yard and it’s spread to 30-50 square feet. naturally the wall is pigmented stucco i just did 5 years ago. so i have to bill their security to kill it burn it off and paint the whole facade. and that’s being charitable to them , because if i wanted painted stucco, i would have saved a lot of money 5 years ago and done painted stucco instead of 3-coat tinted.

still gonna set them back at least a grand, and at the end of the day i end up with a worse wall finish than i started with. just shitty all around.

Ok. Just burned out on a project at work. For the last year+ we’ve been on a super tight timeline, that has had no room for delays. So any minor or major hickup starts snowballing down. meanwhile the scope keeps increasing “well the investors now want to see this too” “really, idgaf.” every week we get this bullshit pep talk and it just makes me angrier. we have a giant phase over the next couple months and they spent about an hour of last weeks meeting talking about shit in Jan  and Feb. Of we don’t make this phase it wont matter. I was getting about taking time off. I’m taking the last 2 weeks of dec off, and I dont care where the project is.

Good luck with the work stuff.

We’re holding up ok here. I’m a little sad because I haven’t seen my parents in almost a year because of this COVID BS. They live 4 hours away. But they’re doing ok for now. On the plus side, work is going pretty well. I got our fleet management company to spring for some heavy duty snow tires for my work van. Fortunately we’re in a vital healthcare business so there’s been only a small drop in business during the spring. We’re back to normal levels now. The husband is not loving his job at the moment, but it’s still better than the one he left, especially since that company is closing all of their stores.

Oh, and I got a new phone today! Well, a new old phone. I used our insurance to turn in my starting-to-break Galaxy Note 8 for a new replacement Note 8. I was going to just get a Note 20 but my phone was not going to qualify for the trade-in due to some minor LCD screen damage. It has other issues that qualified for a claim though, so instead of spending $1k for the new one, I paid a tenth of it for this new one that is still perfectly good for all of my needs and will likely last another two years or so . Now I have money for a tablet if I want one.

Work has been very busy, but it should slow down soon(seasonal) . This year has been weird. Been busy, but have very little stock to sell.   I had the last auto-x 2 weekends ago, killed my summer tires. I put on my old winter tires on until I get new winter tires. Gotta undo the auto-x aliment, it’s not friendly to tires for the street. Might do a rally-x at the end of the month since I already have my old snow tires on.

Life’s life. 2020 was a tough year to graduate but between press cars, owning a childhood dream car and living at Yonge & Sheppard it doesn’t sting too badly.

I have been working on chassis rigidity. I think this car was the spawn for strut tower braces the world over. The difference is very significant. It feels like I put a larger sway bar on the front.

I’m switching to a new team at work, since my old team will be dissolved by the end of the year. I have a lot to catch up on since it’s a completely new architecture to me. Once I’m up to speed, I’ll become a sub- team lead. I’m happy to get out of my old team and onto far more interesting tech, and getting some much better experience, but I’ve also been applying to positions in the PNW, as we want to be moved there by the end of next s um mer (and kinda need to be) . So it’s a tough balancing act. This ‘promotion’ will look great on the resume, but the window on relocation is narrowing.  Covid has been sabotaging my job hunt for months.

Car-wise, I feel like I’m in a holding pattern. I don’t want to move with more shit, so I ‘m resisting adding any cars to the collection.. .especially hard since I recently freed up space and now have room under the carport again.   But I’m also going nuts, because I’m getting the itch big time. I need something fast and German again, and I find myself shopping pop-up truck campers from time to time.

Covid is also wrecking any plans I’ve had for my 40th birthday in less than three weeks. I’ll probably just enjoy a nice wagyu NY strip at home, preorder Cyberpunk 2077 , and postpone the other things I wanted to do for the next trip around the sun.

On the plus side I’ve lost all the Covid weight everyone else has seemed to find.

I’ve been busy with subbing and computer work, but still no permanent teaching position yet :(

Had some rust fixed on my Accent for $959 (bodywork is expensive here...) on Monday, only to pick it up Wednesday to have the body shop tell me when I picked it up that I should consider replacing it soon because ‘it’s a mess’ behind the repair they just made and the next time it gets repaired, an entire quarter panel would have to be put it...so that’s pretty much ruined the last few days as I love that car. Torn on what to do now. Went to an old fellow last night who has done bodywork for like 40 years and he told me he would douse the inside of both rear quarters with like a 1/2 inch of undercoating sealant and go from there... :(

The used car market and housing market are insane right now....I prefer to buy from dealers as then you at least get a bit of a warranty, but most cars in my price range don’t exist right now....my Accent was $6900 taxes and fees included with 54k kms in 2013 when I got it from the local Mazda dealership....cars with 100k km are going for like $9k here right now PLUS tax and fees....that’s going to take a huge chunk out of my house savings :(

There wasn’t any ivy there when they started the lease. Their lease says they’re responsible for maintaining the landscaping in the yard, and I once brought up with them that they needed to make sure the climbing vines weren’t attaching to the fence so I could maintain it. They cut them back at the time but naturally a third of the fence is now overrun with ivy too. I’m not charging them for the fence because I’m just going to damage the fence further trying to remove it at this point. My realtor agrees it’s completely absurd they would let things start growing on the house and his perspective was to bill them if I’m doing the work . It’s not their house to make that decision.

I drove my Mustang GT to Indiana over the weekend. Surprised it averaged 24.5mpg for about 600 miles. Not too bad for the big Coyote motor. It did help that I just cruised along at the speed limit.

It’s weird when your parents start to get old. Not recommended .

Trying to find the personal/home productivity momentum I had when I was off work, but it’s difficult. Also trying to tighten my budget, and figure out what my next job plans are, since it looks like I’m either topped out, or close to topping out pay at my current job. But I have a short vaccation coming up in a few weeks, and I’m really looking forward to that

Feeling pretty productive after the weekend. Had a great date night w the wife on Friday, spent Saturday driving around and getting things done and went to an outdoor socially distanced play (fun) and then yesterday was spent fixing my broken headlight wiring and helping a buddy fix his sink and install a new faucet.

What sucks is they were really pretty great about everything else (let the washing machine gasket get overrun with mold is the only other real complaint.)  There’s a handful of things most other landlords would nickel and dime them for but all in all I can probably address them all myself in a day. I shouldn’t have to and I’m trying to move too, but if I have to whack them $1200 for painting I feel like it’s the least I can do. I really hate having to backcharge security.
